Between 2013 and 2020, the amount of information the world stores and consumes will grow by a factor of 10, from 4.4 trillion gigabytes to 44 trillion gigabytes. In a recent study EMC found that the digital universe is expanding at an alarmingly faster rate than previously forecast. 10% of this information will come from the “Internet of Things”.

China, the world’s largest mobile market entered the 4G era at the end of 2013. 2020 is now widely considered to be the year of 5G Mobile with 5G becoming the hottest key word in the wireless industry. CEET has filed its first patent in conjunction with Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, Bell Labs. The patent, announced by Professor Rod Tucker, Director of CEET, describes a new approach to increasing the energy-efficiency of optical fibre broadband access networks.

We have all become dependent on the Internet. Today the Internet consumes about 1% of the world’s electricity supply, which is equivalent to the total electricity generating capacity in Australia. The quantity of data per user is growing at around 40% per annum.
